Top 5 American Idol season 20 finalist Fritz Hager is a talented singer-songwriter who had many memorable performances on the show that should be highlighted. Fritz is a 22-year-old singer from Tyler, Texas, who worked as a security officer until leaving his job to pursue music. During his audition, Fritz revealed that as a kid he was really inspired by American Idol season 11 winner Phillip Phillips, who sent him a personal message. Fritz later met Phillip in person on the show when he returned to perform. At Fritz's audition, he sang "Before You Go" by Lewis Capaldi. Although judge Luke Bryan did not think he was ready for Hollywood and voted no, Fritz earned his golden ticket with two votes of yes from Katy Perry and Lionel Richie.

Fritz showed a tremendous amount of growth throughout the American Idol competition, gaining confidence as he made it through round after round. Fritz was especially impressive because he performed so many of his own original songs on the show, something that has been considered risky in the past. For Fritz, however, the choice to perform his own music during the competition paid off, as he watched in shock as his self-titled EP reached number one on the pop charts. His popularity skyrocketed and he made it all the way to the American Idol Top 5. Although he was eliminated before the Top 3, Fritz's single, "Hearts Align," written by American Idol season 18 contestant Francisco Martin and Drew Pearson, is currently climbing the charts as well.

It was called "Inconsequential Love," and he wrote it for his little sister, whom he described as the only other person in his family who has any interest in music and a kindred spirit. Fritz shared that he wrote the song after a big fight that he and his sister had with their parents, during which a lot of really hurtful things were said. His emotional performance earned him a standing ovation from Katy, which Fritz said touched his heart because he knew that she was listening and that is all that he has ever wanted. He said that it was the most vulnerable that he had ever been in his entire life. This song earned him a place in the Top 24.

During the American Idol Top 20 week, Fritz sang and played this song, impressing the judges with his emotional falsetto. When he was finished singing, the judges gave him a standing ovation and were moved to tears. Katy told Fritz that American Idol is not just a competition, but an opportunity for people to be reborn. She became choked up when she told Fritz that she did not think that he would ever be misunderstood again, telling him, "I think that you see yourself, we see you, and the world sees you now, Fritz." Luke told him that his falsetto moment was perfectly done.

During the American Idol Judges' Song Contest, Luke chose "Wonderwall" by Oasis for Fritz. Fritz made the song his own, transforming its sound with his emotional, soaring vocals and expert guitar playing. Fritz shared that it was a song that he would never have sung on his own. Lionel said that the song was delivered perfectly. Katy said that Fritz flipped the song on its head and it was "brilliance."

For Disney Night, Fritz chose the ballad "Go the Distance" from Hercules. While some artists try to fit themselves into the Disney mold for this theme, Fritz understood the assignment and reworked the song to match his unique style while maintaining its message and spirit. With an acoustic guitar background and driving percussion, Fritz turned the song into a powerful self-affirming anthem with a rock feel. During American Idol Disney Night, Lionel told Fritz that he has always been "our surprise package on this show" and told him that he stepped again into his light. Luke commended him for creating moments within his songs, and said that he deserved to be there.

During the American Idol Top 7 round, Fritz was sidelined by COVID-19. He could not perform live on the show because he had been diagnosed that morning and had to quarantine in his hotel room. Fortunately, American Idol had recorded Fritz's dress rehearsal, which aired in place of his live performance. In this episode, Fritz played two of his own original songs. For the TikTok round, he sang his song "All My Friends." For the Mother's Day round, Fritz surprised his mom by singing an emotional song that he wrote at the request of his late grandmother called "The Ocean," about their family beach house. Luke told Fritz that he looked and sounded like a pro, and that he plays the guitar with so much emotion. Lionel told him that his star had arrived. Katy said that "The Ocean" was one of the most beautiful songs that she has ever heard about grandmothers. She said that he continued to shock her and blow her away.

For what turned out to be Fritz's final American Idol performance, he sang "Youngblood" by 5 Seconds of Summer. Dressed in a black leather jacket, Fritz did not play the guitar, saying he had to put it down at some point, and showed a different side of himself by moving around the stage. Katy told him that he looked like a member of The Strokes or The Ramones and that he was so cool. Luke joked that he was going to have to ask the show to remove the clip of him telling Fritz no at his American Idol audition. This validated Fritz's place in the competition.

During the American Idol competition, Fritz showed the most growth as he built up his confidence and became the singer that he always wanted to be. His beautiful and original music captured the hearts of his fans. With his talent and artistry, Fritz will surely find a place in the music industry.
